Benefits of a Multifunctional Sunscreen Formulation Containing Nanoencapsulated Antioxidants

Skin aging is driven not just by genetics but also by environmental stressors, particularly sunlight. While UV radiation is a known culprit, infrared-A and visible light—especially blue light—also accelerate photoaging. Blue light can increase free radicals, trigger inflammation, and reduce opsin-3 photoreceptors, all contributing to hyperpigmentation and skin damage. To counteract these effects, researchers evaluated a new multifunctional sunscreen (AHFPS.013A) containing nanoencapsulated antioxidants and other active compounds. This formulation aims to deliver broad-spectrum photoprotection and additional skin benefits, including hydration, anti-aging effects, and oxidative stress reduction.

Methods
The study combined in vitro, ex vivo, and clinical evaluations. Human skin explants were used to assess ROS protection and opsin-3 expression. Clinical trials with female participants evaluated SPF, UVA protection, hydration, collagen synthesis, and user-perceived benefits over a 28- to 84-day period.

Key Findings

  • Broad-Spectrum Protection: SPF 32.9 with strong UVA coverage.
  • Antioxidant Defense: Reduced UV-induced ROS by 37.3%.
  • Blue Light Protection: Increased opsin-3 levels by 183.2% in exposed skin.
  • Collagen Boost: Significant collagen synthesis increase after 84 days.
  • Visible Benefits: 85.3% noticed reduced fine lines, 94.1% reported firmer skin.
  • Hydration: Skin moisture increased by 30.42% within 24 hours, sustained over 28 days.
  • Dark Circle Reduction: 88.2% noticed improvement under the eyes.
  • Excellent Tolerability: No irritation or adverse reactions reported.

This study highlights a next-generation sunscreen that not only shields against UVA and UVB but also defends against blue light damage—often overlooked in conventional sun care. With nanoencapsulated antioxidants like ascorbyl palmitate, caffeine, and resveratrol, combined with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, the formulation offers powerful antioxidant, hydrating, and anti-aging benefits. Its long-term use supports collagen production, skin firmness, and pigmentation control, making it a strong contender in multifunctional skincare. This research supports a holistic, daily approach to skin protection—addressing both environmental exposure and intrinsic aging.
