What Even Is a Topical?

We apply creams, gels, ointments, and serums every day, but what exactly makes something a topical product?

A topical is any formulation designed to be applied directly to the surface of the body, usually the skin to deliver active ingredients for either localized effects (such as moisturizing, soothing inflammation, or repairing the barrier)” or, in some cases, systemic effects (as with medicated patches). These include creams, ointments, lotions, gels, sprays and balms.

We often think of active ingredients as something we ingest or inject, but the body offers multiple routes for delivery each with its own purpose. Topicals are unique because they are applied directly to the skin, focusing on localized effects like hydration, soothing, or targeted treatment. In contrast, oral formulations travel through the digestive system to reach the bloodstream and affect the entire body. Injectables bypass these steps entirely, offering rapid or highly targeted action. Transdermal patches also use the skin, but are designed for slow, systemic absorption, while inhalable forms deliver actives through the lungs for fast local or systemic effects. It’s not about one being better than another, it is about choosing the right route for the right job.

 How Do Topicals Work?

The skin, particularly the stratum corneum (outermost layer), acts as a strong barrier which great for protection, but a challenge for delivery.

That’s why topicals are designed with delivery systems that can:

  • Retain actives in the top layers (for hydration, repair, protection)
  • Penetrate deeper into the epidermis or dermis (for anti-inflammatory or pigmentation control)

The real magic lies in the formulation, not just the ingredient, but how it’s delivered.

What Makes a Good Topical?

A well-designed topical does more than feel nice on application. It must:

  • Allow penetration without irritation
  • Maintain stability of active ingredients
  • Match skin compatibility in terms of pH and texture
  • Deliver results where needed

This is why formulation science matters so much. An active alone is ineffective without a compatible vehicle, appropriate penetration enhancers, and skin-matching properties.

The Cymbiotics Edge

At Cymbiotics, our topical formulations including creams, lotions, gels, ointments, and hair-care products focus on dermal precision, formulating products that are efficient, fast-acting, and skin-compatible.

Our innovations include:

  • FADD Technology (Fast Acting Dermal Delivery) – A proprietary delivery system designed to accelerate the delivery of active ingredients into the skin, ensuring targeted benefits.
  • Cetosome™ Technology – a patented nano-delivery technology that stabilizes ingredients and boosts skin penetration. This delivery platform ensures controlled release, reduced irritation, and superior efficacy, without compromising barrier health.

These technologies are what power our formulations delivering real results with scientific precision.

Topicals are more than surface-level skincare but a blend of biology, chemistry, and targeted action.
